Rod knock? Lifter tick? Exhaust gasket leak? It’s pretty quiet until you open the hood, in fact you can’t hear it inside the car with the windows up. Seems to come from the front exhaust side of the engine. Gets faster with revs but not louder.

Sounds too thumpy and not enough ticky to be lifters... You say it comes from exhaust side? Perhaps exhaust leak? That’s fairly easy to catch with a visual inspection. Notice any exhaust clouds in the wrong places on cold days?

It reminds me of a quadbike we had that wasn’t compressing... maybe that?
I don’t know much about sound diagnosing but maybe head gasket failure or piston ring failure?

Could you get a cheap compression tester from Harbour Freight, remove the fuel pump fuse and then turn it over with the tester on each cylinder to see if one lost compression?

Pretty sure that’s an exhaust leak. I’ve had one beer so I’m usually pretty good at everything right now. One to two beers later and I’m garbage.

Sounds a little ticky to me, but you didn’t have it idling long enough for me to tell.

Can’t help on the noise. I’m just here to lament the inability to put commas in take lines.

I think the engine in your car is morphing into a steam engine...
